Prague's Old Town Square

…on a beautiful summer evening.

New, noisy and nummy in Prague

Fans of old mechanical objects -- planes, trains and automobiles -- know that prior to World War II the Czech's gave the Germans a real run for their money when it came to inventive and ingenious. Not that the Czechs aren't still smart, but they had a long period when ingenuity was not rewarded. During the Soviet occupation, ingenuity could get you killed. So it's nice to see some of the old Czech machinery being exhibited in a newly renovated museum in Prague.

Stern and functionalist in appearance, the National Technical Museum in Prague is actually a wondrous three-story transport hall, filled with antique vehicles. Reopened following a $20 million renovation, the museum is drawing in crowds with novelties like the oldest existing Bugati car and 16th-century instruments employed by famed Prague-based astronomer Tycho Brahe.

And speaking of Prague. The Czechs make wonderful beers, and they do pork, potatoes and cabbage as well as anybody, but the native cuisine can be a bit, ummm, monotone. When I'm traveling through here, I like to break out with something a bit spicy whenever possible, so it's nice to see a surge of new Indian restaurants opening recently.

Quality furnishings, warm, rich colors, friendly staff and a great location. The Liberty is housed in a carefully restored Art Nouveau building from the late 1800’s, and located on a quiet street near the bottom of Wenceslas Square, the humming heartbeat of Prague. Old Town Square, Charles Bridge and Josefov are all less than a 10-minute walk away, and you have easy access to trams and subway for castle hill and other parts of Prague.

Kampa Island is a quiet little enclave on the Mala Strana side of the river, just steps from Charles Bridge and a few minutes walk from most of the major sights.
The Archibald at the Charles Bridge builds on this great location with a friendly staff and charming rooms in a historic building.
Rooms on the square side can be noisy, despite the hotel being in a traffic free zone. Riverside rooms are quiet, and some offer views of the river and the Charles Bridge.
Only the noise issue, and some minor problems with fixtures keep this hotel from getting my top rating.
Note that there in no elevator, and the hotel has three floors. Also, only deluxe rooms have air conditioning (though it’s seldom needed in Prague).

You can check availability and reserve rooms on-line for the
Archibald at the Charles Bridge.
