What is Truth?

Detail of the Passion Façade on Antoní Gaudi's Sagrada Familia church, in Barcelona.

The entire façade is covered with scenes from the Passion of Christ, his betrayal, arrest, torture, and death. On the left you can see Christ bound to the pillar where He was flogged before being led out to the hill of Golgotha for crucifixion. The doors into the church are are covered in phrases from the Gospels that describe the Passion. Highlighted are Pontius Pilate's question to Christ "What is Truth?" from the Gospel of John 18:38, and "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews", the inscription that Pilate ordered be placed on the cross.

Homage to Barcelona

Hey Barcelona, see you next month.

In Barcelona? Visit Girona!

SS

Girona is one of my top day trip tips for visitors to Barcelona. Just 30 minutes north by high speed train, this attractive little town has one of the best preserved Jewish quarters in Spain, a massive cathedral, and well-preserved Arab baths (that aren't really Arab).

One of the city’s most historic hotels, the entry is directly opposite the cathedral façade. Superb staff, but the underwhelming room decor looks like something from the late 1950's, a little too much 'pastels and flowers' for my taste, though not all of the rooms suffer from this. Rooms run from smallish, with views into the internal courtyard, to large rooms with terraces and views of the cathedral.

Singles: €140, Doubles: €170 to €265, Triples: €215 to €250, Suites: €325, Credit Cards: All major credit cards accepted.

Footloose in Barcelona: dancing the Sardana

If you happen to be wandering through the cathedral square in old town Barcelona on a Sunday, you'll likely see a bunch of people hopping and bobbing in large circles. It may look like they are trying to stand barefoot on hot pavement, but they are really dancing the Sardana, the Catalonian national dance. Check out the video here.
