Hotels in Venice

Well meaning friends may suggest that you stay in Mestre, Venice’s modern mainland area, or maybe even in Padua or Verona. “It’s much less expensive,” they’ll say. It’s true that Venice is expensive—you’ll pay 25% more here than you would for equivalent accommodations in any other city in Italy. But by staying in Venice itself you gain immeasurable enjoyment. You’ll see the city at its best, in the early morning when delivery men and local shoppers are the only one’s moving about; and in the evening, when most of the tourists and all of the pigeons have fled. So budget a bit more for a hotel in Venice, or move you expectations down a notch, but by all means, stay on the island.

Coming into town without reservations, you can hop off the vaporetto at the train station and make a few phone calls. There’s also a room finding service, located in a little building in front of the station (though in my experience the people there have been less than enthusiastic).

Most of my hotel recommendations are in two areas: between Rialto and Saint Mark’s Square, and near Accademia Bridge. The Rialto/Saint Mark’s area is more central, but also can be very crowded, touristy and more expensive. The Accademia area means a longer walk to many of the sights, but it’s quieter and has a more residential feel.
This is just a small selection of the hotels that I visit and review every year. If you'd like the full list, or need some help with organizing your own self-guided trip, please contact me about my Trip Planning Service.

HOTEL BELLE ARTI

67 rooms.

In a city known for its historic façades, the Belle Arti stands out as an exception—a bland, square, modern building with an interior to match. While not overly exciting, the rooms are predictable, with some Venetian charm. The redeeming features are the entrance and loggia, perfect for resting tired feet and having an afternoon drink; predictable, modern comforts, including an elevator; and a great location on the Dorsoduro side of the Accademia Bridge.

An eight minute ride from St Mark’s Square, out beyond the floating mass of San Giogio Maggiore, is the island of San Clemente. The island is an oasis, with a large Baroque monastery built in the 17th-century, a lush garden and fountains. The monastery building has been converted to a luxury hotel, replete with every amenity your could wish for. Guests are shuttled back and forth from St. Marks Square to island by a private boat.

Under the same ownership as the Hotel American, the Falier is a great option for those on a tight budget. The upside is a great staff, very clean and well kept rooms, and spotless modern bathrooms. On the downside rooms are plain, and it’s a long way from the major sights.

A nice mid-range hotel, clean and modern rooms that were upgraded recently. The renovation has added greatly to the charm of the rooms, which were rather plain and sterile but now have attractive colors and furnishings. Ideal location midway between Rialto and St. Marks.

34 rooms. Singles: €120 Doubles: €150 Visa/MC accepted.

The Bel Sito lives up to it’s name, beautifully located across from the Santa Maria del Giglio church and just a short walk to St. Marks or the Accademia. Room decor puts its last renovation firmly in the 1950’s, but everything is very clean and surprisingly well maintained. Staff is exceptionally friendly, the air conditioning is some of the best I’ve had in Venice, and they have an elevator, a rare thing in Venice. There is also a covered patio out front, where you can have breakfast (better than average), or sit in the evening with a glass of wine while enjoying views of the church and the people people wandering through the square.

16 rooms. Singles: €120 Doubles: €165 Visa/MC accepted.

Once a 16th century convent, many rooms have interesting features such as beam ceilings, Murano glass chandeliers and elaborate mirror frames. Rooms are slightly larger than the usual Venetian shoebox (but not much). In an unbeatable location, on a quiet square just a few yards from a vaporetto stop and St. Marks Square. The only drawback is their draconian cancellation policy, which charges you a €25 penalty if you have to cancel, no matter how far in advance you do it.
